Skylar's Story
Our daughter Skylar (22 months old) spiked a random fever beginning of last week, with everything going on in the world we tried to treat it at home until she seemed to be getting worse. We took her to her pediatrician where she tested negative for Covid/Flu and it was thought to be a UTI but referred us to the childrens emergency room for further testing. We arrived at the childrens emergency room to be told they see an infection based on her white blood cell count and they performed an ultrasound and saw her kidney was inflamed. At this finding they told us she needed to be admitted to the hospital to receive care for what they believed was a kidney infection. They told us unfortunately they had no beds and we needed to be transferred to the downtown location via ambulance. For an infection the typical medicine is antibiotics which she received very early on. They kept checking only to find out even with antibiotics the inflammation in her body was spreading to other organs first her kidney and then her liver. We spent about 72 hours giving her antibiotics and her fever was still spiking and her inflammation numbers still rising. Sunday a specialist came in from the infectious disease team and asked us have we heard of Kawasaki Disease skylar checked most of the boxes: Red Chapped Lips Strawberry Tongue Swollen/ red hands and feet Rash Red eyes She received the treatment and literally within hours I watched a miracle happen as my baby started coming back to life. Skylar hadn’t talked or ate in 7 days. Not only was she coming back to life nothing abnormal was detected with her EKG. I wouldn’t wish the fear that we faced on my worst enemy. Thank you to the team at Childrens Hospital of Michigan for saving my child’s life.
Misdiagnosis?
They misdiagnosed her with first a UTI then a kidney infection. Then finally they treated her for Kawasaki disease.
Current Conditions
She is healing at a great pace in my opinion. She is starting to get her energy back and smiling and laughing again. We are just so grateful we have our baby back.
