Pratt's Story
Well let’s start here pratt was a happy, healthy, wild rambunctious, little 5 year old boy that started kindergarten on August 18, 2021. We was roughly 2 weeks into school when covid hit our household, yucky! So we took our 10 days of quarantine and spent some quality time together as a family. We finally got started back with school on September 13th, 2021. So, what started off as a regular day of pratt going to school, ended in the most terrible night. He came home off the bus and I picked him up as usually to head home and start of homework. Well he came in and said he was tired, which I didn’t think anything of it being that this was his first day back in school in 2 weeks. So he went and took him a nap, and didn’t wake up till around 5:30. I took him and his sister to get some supper from sonic and he said he wasn’t hungry but I got him something anyways and we head home. He wanted his drink which was ocean water. Well, we get home to him screaming his stomach hurt, so I told him just to go to bed. I would say about 15 minutes later he is throwing up everywhere, and it’s blue. (Ocean water blue) He is literally throwing up every 10-15 minutes on the dot. I rushed him to the local ER. We finally get back and they give him nausea meds to stop the vomiting. He is running a low grade fever and states his feet are hurting. They run their test and everything comes back fine, they send us home with a diagnose of dehydration and something to do with his feet around 6 am. We get home and get some rest and finally wake up around 10 am. He is not getting any better, if anything he is getting worse. I notice a rash starting to appear on his body which started under his arms, in his inner thighs, and inside his belly button. I proceed to call a couple friends of mine that are in the medical profession to come and look at him and see what they think. They told me I needed to take him somewhere else. I, then decided to take him to a children’s hospital about 3 hours from home. We finally get there and get back into a room after a long wait. At this point he is running high fever, not able to hold his bowels or urine, rash is taken over his body, he is weak, he can’t walk because his feet are hurting him, his tongue is strawberry red with white dots, and he is not himself what so ever. The doctors come in and let us know that it is possible that he has Kawasaki Disease, and that he fits all the criteria except having fever for 5 days. They then proceed to send us home and tell us to wait 5 days and if he is no better to come back. :( so we proceed to drive that 3 hour drive back home. We finally get home around 4 am. We get us a few hours of rest, to then run to town to grab a good thermometer (so I could keep a check on exact temps) and get his antibiotics prescribed by the doctor. I then call the local pediatrician just to see what I am dealing with and how serious this can be. She proceeds to tell me that this is nothing to play with and I tell her his symptoms and she calls the local hospital back and told them to have a ambulance ready when we got there to go a different Children’s hospital. We finally go ambulance to Jackson, MS Children’s hospital and when we get there the doctors tell us that what we are dealing with is either Kawasaki Disease or MIS-C. Well being covid was in our household a couple weeks before they had their suspicions that it was MIS-C, but we ruled that out with a covid antibody test. Therefore, we finally had a definite diagnosis of KD. He was directly admitted to get started with IVIG. He was given the meds the next day and was better soon after. He stayed in the hospital around 4 days, and he was back to normal and ready to go. He has had great follow up appointments and we are very hopeful to know that there has been nothing abnormal detected since leaving the hospital. With his story, I just want parents to know that you know when something is wrong with your child and don’t let anyone tell you differently. I could of completely went against my motherly instincts and said you know what the doctors are right, he is fine, but I didn’t and couldn’t. I pushed with everything I had to get him the treatment he needed, 4 days of no sleep, barely eating, and worrying, but I’m so glad to have my little KD man back to normal.
Misdiagnosis?
He was diagnosed with everything from dehydration, cellulitis, to possible Kawasaki disease or MIS-C. He was treated with antibiotics at first. After Kawasaki diagnosis, he was treated with IVIG.
Current Conditions
He is a perfectly healthy 6 year old boy with no complications. He will have his 6 month checkup in April 2022 to hopefully be released.
